PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD <br />MINUTES <br />August 18, 1993 <br />The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session <br />August 18, 1993, at 4 PM in the Gallery with Chairman Beth Shelton, <br />presiding, and these members present: Jackie Alsobrook, Virginia <br />Gibbs, Jean Gibson, and Frances Ellis, Secretary. Absent were Bill <br />Hagood, Bill Neely, Rogene Patterson, and Joe Rex. Beverly Lewis, <br />Library Director, attended, and Thomas Seay, NETLS lay <br />representative was present. <br />The minutes of the July 21, 1993, meeting were approved as <br />circulated. <br />Ms. Lewis gave the budget report saying expenditures were in line. <br />The cicrulation report showed a slight decrease in books although <br />videos and audio books were up. She said evening circulation was <br />still increasing. <br />Ms. Lewis reported 350 new books accessioned with 261 adult, 89 <br />juvenile, 59 videos, and 78 audio books which are becoming more in <br />demand. <br />Ms. Lewis called attention to the children's Summer Reading Program <br />which ended July 30/31 with a family movie night on Friday and a <br />storytime party on Saturday afternoon. 135 children received their <br />certificates of achievement and over 1,500 participated during the <br />summer. They loved the weekly activities based on The Wizard of Oz <br />book, especially the pin -up games. She said The Little House on <br />the Prairie may be the 1994 theme. <br />She discussed the status of the automation request noting it had <br />been proposed as a capital line item of $25,000; but nothing had <br />been done about it yet. She said the staff would visit three <br />libraries, Texarkana, Plano and Tyler, to study their systems <br />before the vendors provide demonstrations here. <br />Mrs. Alsobrook reported on a meeting with the committee from the <br />County and City which took place August 17 at the Library when the <br />request for funding from the County was presented. She said the <br />dialogue and interchange was excellent, and another meeting would <br />be held next week. <br />Ms. Lewis reported on the grant received by the Paris Independent <br />School District for "Project Even Start ". It focuses on family <br />literacy and she will be working with the soon -to -be -hired project <br />director to develop cooperative programs. <br />
