PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD
FEBRUARY 16, 1994
MINUTES
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session Wednesday, February 16, 1994,
at 4 PM in the Library Gallery with Chairman Beth Shelton presiding and these members present:
Jean Gibson, Virginia Gibbs, Bill Hagood, Rogene Patterson, Joe Rex and Frances A. Ellis,
Secretary. Absent were Jackie Alsobrook and Bill Neely. K. Haynes, City Attorney, conducted the swearing in of Board members and they took the
Oath of Office together and then signed their individual Oaths.
The Budget Report indicated expenditures are on target with about 37% of the budget being
spent since October.
The Statistical Report indicated 63,517 items have circulated this fiscal year, which is a 5.7%
increase over last year. The evening circulation continues to increase.
Ms. Lewis said 350 new adult books had been accessioned in January, including a variety of
subjects from juggling to WWII in the Pacific. More large print books had been received and
$2,000 worth of audio books added. She explained the new selection committee, three staff
members and the Director, were making choices and this was proving worthwhile.
Ms. Lewis said the combined meeting to study county funding had met with two Commissioners
and the City Manager and the major question about the proposed contract was item five which
concerns the amount of money and how it would be paid. The amount, or a third, seemed to be
agreeable, as it is based on use by out of city residents, but the method of paying was not.
Another meeting is scheduled in April.
Ms. Lewis reported that Bill Hagood and she were studying the responses from the automation
vendors and they were finding some items could be bought locally for less, and this study will
continue. She said the Library would be closed for from three to five days during the set up. The
NETLS Automation Consultant had given a $15,000 error in his recommended figures and he has
apologized to the Director and the Board.
The Volunteer Appreciation luncheon was held February 14 with 39 attending, including
volunteers, members of the Board, and the City Manager.
