May 17, 1995 <br />MINUTES <br />The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session, Wednesday, May 17, 1995, in the <br />Gallery with Chairman Beth Shelton presiding and these members present: Virginia Gibbs, Jean <br />Gibson, Rogene Patterson, Keitt Wood, and Frances Ellis, Secretary. Absent were Jackie <br />Alsobrook, Bill Hagood, and Joe Rex. Library Director Beverly Lewis attended, with Emily <br />Kirkman, Children's Librarian, coming in to report. <br />The April 19, 1995 Minutes were approved as circulated. <br />Ms. Lewis said the budget figures indicated expenditures were in line for the seventh month of the <br />fiscal year. <br />The statistical reports showed that in the 19 days the Library was open in April, 15,673 items <br />circulated which was an increase over last year during the same month. Reference assistance was <br />provided 2,832 times, fifteen inter - library loans were made, and 197 books were reserved. There <br />were 27 programs with an attendance of 338. <br />Accessions included 200 new titles and the majority were juvenile books and videos. <br />Ms. Lewis advised the patron data base includes 7,562 patrons who live in Paris and 7,030 who <br />reside outside the city. <br />Mrs. Kirkman reported the Summer Reading Club theme is "Look for a Book and Find a Friend" <br />and she will present daily programs for kids in first through sixth grade to include stories, crafts, <br />music, and puppet shows. Mary Bryant will provide daily storytimes for preschoolers. Ms. Lewis <br />announced the Friends of the Library will sponsor a SRC Assistant and pay her minimum -wage <br />salary for June and July, two hours per day. <br />Ms. Lewis advised the Great North American Race will make a pit stop in Paris the afternoon of <br />July 8. More than 100 old cars will stop in 44 locations along the route from Ottawa, Canada, to <br />Mexico City, Mexico. At the conclusion of the race the drivers and navigators will vote on the <br />most hospitable pit stop, and the winner will receive $5,000 for the public library. She noted that <br />the kids from the Summer Reading Club will participate in a short skit to be presented that <br />afternoon and that volunteers are needed to help. <br />Ms. Lewis noted the new automated system is working very well for checking materials in and <br />out and the public access catalogs are proving popular with the patrons. Several small problems <br />about the ability to correct typing mistakes still exist, but the system representative is working to <br />correct them soon. <br />-MORE- <br />
