PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD
AUGUST 16, 1995
MINUTES
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session Wednesday, August 16, 1995, in
the Library with Chair Beth Shelton presiding and these members present: Jackie Alsobrook, Jean
Gibson, Toni Donnan, Rogene Patterson, Keitt Wood, and Francis Ellis, Secretary. Kathie Gibbs,
Friends President, and Beverly Lewis, Library Director, also attended. Absent were Virginia
Gibbs and Joe Rex.
The June 17, 1995, Minutes were approved as distributed.
The Director reported that expenditures were in line for the ten months of this fiscal year with the
department having expended 73% of the total amount budgeted.
To date, no meeting has been held with the City Manager to discuss the proposed 95 -96 Budget.
Ms. Lewis distributed the statistical report which indicated a 6% circulation increase through July
of this year compared to the same time last year. In June and July this year, the circulation was
over twenty percent higher than during those same months last year. Another statistic indicates
circulation by residency is split nearly evenly between those patrons who reside in the City and
those who reside outside the City.
The final automation training will take place August 28 when the Gaylord liaison discusses the
acquisitions and reserve modules.
The Summer Reading Club was very successful this year because more than 2,000 children
attended the daily programs and participated in telling about the stories they read. The Director
distributed a handout which summarized the SRC program and listed the sponsors. It was
decided to place books in the juvenile collection to honor each of the local sponsors for their
contributions.
Because Paris was voted the "Best Pit Stop" in the Great North American Race, the Library
received a $5,000 prize. Ms. Lewis announced the money would be used to purchase "Billy the
Book ", a robotic book that will bring the power of animation to library programs that promote
the importance of reading. The three -foot tall, radio - controlled robot will be the first one of its
kind, and is being specially designed by a robotics company in Utah.
Ms. Lewis advised bids will be let soon for two computer systems with CD ROM capabilities
which will support the two new reference stations providing magazine and journal texts. These
products will replace the print formats of these reference tools and have a much broader scope.
