PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY
MATERIALS SELECTION POLICY
SELECTION PHILOSOPHY
The Paris Public Library subscribes to the selection principles
contained in the Library Bill of Rights, The Freedom to Read
Statement, and the Freedom to View Statement adopted by the American
Library Association and the Texas Library Association Intellectual
Freedom Statement.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The Paris Public Library acknowledges its responsibility to collect
materials and to organize and make those resources available for the
citizens of Lamar County.
The main goal of the Paris Public Library Materials Selection Policy
is to ensure the maintenance of a collection with the highest
quality public library-,materials possible for all reading levels.
Selection of all 'formats of library materials will be guided by the
following criteria:
INFORMATION ACCURACY
MATERIAL FORMAT AND PHYSICAL CONDITION
SUBJECT COMPREHENSIVENESS AND TREATMENT DEPTH
PRESENTATION CLARITY AND LOGIC
ARTISTIC PRESENTATION OR FICTION ORIGINALITY
REPRESENTATION OF VARYING VIEWS AND TASTES IN RELATION TO THE
ENTIRE LIBRARY COLLECTION
SUSTAINED INTEREST OR POPULAR APPEAL
AUTHOR EXPERTISE OR REPUTATION
COST
SELECTION RESPONSIBILITY
Ultimate responsibility for selection lies with the Library
Director. The Director makes selections and also receives selection
assistance from designated staff members.
Because every title cannot be read nor every media production viewed
or heard before purchase, professional selection tools are utilized
as a source of information about available materials. These
selection aids, such as journals, subject bibliographies, and
reviews;, provide critical opinions about print and non —print
materials, and are utilized judiciously.
