PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD <br />DECEMBER 16, 1998 <br />MIl%lUTES <br />The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met Wednesday, December 16, 1998, at the home of Virginia <br />Gibbs with Chairman Keitt Wood presiding and these members present, Jackie Alsobrook, Virginia <br />Gibbs, John Howison, Rogene Patterson, Beth Shelton, and Frances Ellis, Secretary. Beverly Lewis, <br />Library Director, and Catharine Browning, Friends President, attended. Absent were Curtis Fendley and <br />Ralph Rodgers. <br />The November 18, 1998, Minutes were approved as distributed. <br />Ms. Lewis distributed the Statistical Report and noted November circulation had increased 6% over the <br />previous year with 23,419 titles checked out. She advised 764 new items were placed in the collection <br />and 233 of them were juvenile titles. The November Budget Report was not available from the city <br />finance office. <br />Ms. Lewis noted there were sixteen programs for children held in November and 267 kids and 128 adults <br />attended. She advised 19 kids and 8 adults enjoyed the Library's first Thanksgiving Storytime <br />Celebration. <br />Outreach services to seniors and homebound patrons were provided at twelve locations and the circulation <br />of materials again increased with 861 books, 205 audio books, 217 videos and 115 magazines being <br />checked out to those patrons. <br />Ms. Lewis said the NETLS Coordinator advised most other libraries in the system use the same age, under <br />18, for permission to obtain a library card and for permission to use the Internet. <br />Chairman Wood advised she had received a letter 12/07/98 from Mayor Charles Neeley in response to the <br />Board's 11/18/98 memorandum regarding county funding. On 12/1/98 the Mayor, City Manager, and <br />Library Director met and discussed the issue. Ms. Lewis advised the Mayor asked the Board to develop a <br />proposal and present it to the City Council next year. <br />Chairman Wood advised she will be moving next spring and the February meeting would probably be the <br />last meeting she could attend. Upon motion by Beth Shelton, second by John Howison, it was <br />unanimously decided Jackie Alsobrook would serve as Chairman through June, 1999. <br />Catharine Browning advised the Friends funded the Library Sleepover and refreshments for the Christmas <br />Parade participants. <br />Ms. Lewis reported that she and Chairman Wood attended the recent NETLS meeting where there were <br />several informative presentations about technology in the library. <br />The meeting adjourned at 5 PM. <br />Frances A.
