PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD <br />JUNE 16, 1999 <br />MINUTES <br />The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session Wednesday, June 16, 1999, at <br />4 PM in the Gallery with Chairman Jackie Alsobrook presiding and these members present: <br />Curtis Fendely, Sarah Gambil, John Howison, Beth Shelton and Frances Ellis, Secretary. <br />Virginia Gibbs, Rogene Patterson, and Ralph Rodgers were absent. Library Director, Beverly <br />Lewis, -and Friends President, Jimmye Hancock, were present. <br />The May 26, 1999, Minutes were corrected to show that Sarah Gambill was absent. <br />The Budget Report was distributed and it was noted that expenditures were nearly on target for <br />the first eight months of the fiscal year. <br />The Statistical Report was distributed and it was noted that the May circulation was 8.7% higher <br />than for the same month last year. Year to date circulation is up 10% and 205,642 items have <br />been checked out during the first eight months of this fiscal year. 1,280 items were added to the <br />collection in May and the majority were books. <br />The Library participated in the Paris Art Fair last month at the Fairgrounds. Staff members gave <br />away balloon animals and summer program schedules and held four well attended puppet shows. <br />Outreach services to senior sites and homebound patrons continues to be well utilized. In May, <br />1,074 books; 301 videos; 289 audio books; and 106 magazines were circulated. <br />The Summer Reading Club is in its third week and there has been good attendance so far. Also, <br />there was a very informative article with two pictures in The Paris News recently about the SRC. <br />The Mobile Library Summer Reading Service is in its second week and there was higher than <br />usual attendance during the first week at all locations except at the Nicholson House. The Lamar <br />County Department of Human Resources can not provide transportation this summer for the kids <br />to that site, therefore, other resources are being investigated. <br />Chairman Alsobrook announced City Council appointed the following new members to the <br />Board on June 16: Nancee Salzman, Bill Strathern, and Walter Williams. Their terms begin in <br />July. <br />Director Lewis advised the new city purchasing procedures have definitely slowed down Library <br />operations because of the staff time involved to prepare and process the required paperwork. <br />u_•' <br />
