PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD <br />DECEMBER 15, 1999 <br />MINUTES <br />The Paris Public Library met on Wednesday, December 15, 1999, at 4:10 PM in Ruth <br />Ann Alsobrook's home for our Christmas gathering and Board Meeting with Chairman <br />Jackie Alsobrook presiding after refreshments and desserts were served. Present at the <br />meeting were Sarah Gambill, John Howison, Rogene Patterson, Nancee Salzman and Bill <br />Strathern. Absent were Virginia Gibbs, Curtis Fendley and Walter Williams. Library <br />Director Beverly Lewis was also present. Friends President Jimmye Hancock was <br />absent. <br />The November 17, 1999 Minutes were approved as distributed. <br />The Budget Report was not available from the City finance office. We are in the second <br />month of the fiscal year and Ms. Lewis advised expenditures are in line with the budget. <br />The Statistical Report showed that 689 fewer items were circulated last month than in the <br />same month the previous year, making a 2.9% decrease in circulation with 22,370 items <br />compared to 23,419. There was more reference assistance in the electronic reference area <br />with 55 assists which means a patron was actually shown how to use a program or the <br />computer. <br />866 items were placed on the shelves which was a 13% increase over the previous month. <br />The majority were books and videos. Last month there was a 28% increase in new card <br />holders with 173 new patrons entered and the total is 20,000 card holders. Last month <br />volunteers gave 200 hours of service to the Library. <br />The collection includes 90,135 books; 4,800 audio books; and 8,700 videos. <br />Children's services showed an increase in library tours and attendance in weekly <br />storytimes for preschoolers. There were programs about Arthur and the Harry Potter <br />books. The National Library Weeks activities were very successful. Utilities Director, <br />Herb Campbell, read to children and adults in the lobby Tuesday evening and kids took <br />turns reading to themselves on Thursday evening. The Friday sleepover included stories, <br />plays, a scavenger hunt, and puppet shows and was enjoyed by the 32 kids and three <br />adults who spent the night in the Library. <br />-MORE- <br />
