Sanders Creek
Sanders Creek begins in western Lamar County and flows northeasterly 23 miles into Red River
three miles west of Arthur City. This is one of only two creeks in Texas known to contain the
Ouachita rock - pocketbook, a federally endangered freshwater mussel (Howells et al., 1997). It
has been indicated that this species of mussel always occurs within large beds containing a
diversity of species, thus it is likely that Sanders Creek, much like Pine Creek, contains a diverse
mix of freshwater mussels (Howells et al., 1997). The candidate segments are from the
confluence with the Red River in Lamar County upstream to Pat Mayse Dam and from Pat
Mayse Reservoir upstream to the confluence of Spring Branch in Lamar County.
(1) Biological Function- no significant biological function identified.
(2) Hydrologic Function- no information available.
(3) Riparian Conservation Area fringed by the Pat Mayse State Wildlife Management Area.
(4) High Water Quality/Exceptional Aquatic Life/High Aesthetic Value- insufficient data to
evaluate criteria.
(5) Threatened or Endangered Species/Unique Communities- one of two sites in Texas where the
federally endangered Ouachita rock - pocketbook has been collected (Howells, 1995; Howells
et al., 1997).
UFA
