City of Paris
Alternate Collection Method
Sanitation Department
May, 1999
In an effort to lower the number and severity of accidents in the Sanitation Department, the following
recommendation is submitted for review. This suggestion is flexible and could be adjusted or
incorporated into several changes or adjustments to our collection function in the future.
One of the contributing factors in the formulation of this recommendation was the complaints by
several sanitation department employees that the collection job is too strenuous.
Recommendation
This option would create full routes t the present time, there are 4 full routes and 1 route that is
picked up on Monday and Friday my (which takes only '/2 day both days).
The four existing routes would be shortened by approximately 100 stops each. Those 400 stops
would be added to the existing half route. This change would lower the existing routes to about 850
stops each, and would expand the half route to approximately 750 stops. Fewer stops are necessary
on the existing half route to allow more time for driving.
This method would require 10 full -time collectors. At present, we have 8 full -time collectors and 2
collectors who work' /2 day on Mondays and Fridays collecting trash and performing miscellaneous
duties the remainder of the such as operating the chipper or working at the compost site.
The crews would work 8 -hour shifts with a 30 - 60 minutes lunch brake. Shorter routes and longer
shifts would allow a slower work pace. This should lower fatigue and possibly reduce injuries.
The requirements of this phase of the recommendation are:
The purchase of another truck for full time duty; at present we use one of the spare trucks
for the half route.
13 full-time collectors, 10 for routes and 3 for filling in vacation, injury days, and sick time.
