City of Paris
Brush Chipper
Processing Alternatives
May, 1999
The continued growth of the chipping service provided the Sanitation Department has reached a
volume that requires serious consideration of changes in the manner in which this function is
accomplished. This recommendation would alter the method by which we accomplish the brush
chipping function and will contain several benefits, as well as the most obvious disadvantages.
Recommendation:
This method would continue the service to the citizens of Paris as it is presently provided. Adding
an additional chipper would require five (5) employees to maintain this service at its present level.
The crew will be made up of a crew leader and four (4) collectors. This method would not require
any adjustments by the citizens of Paris, thereby keeping complaints to a minimum. Adding additional
equipment and personnel would allow the Sanitation Department to provide a more timely service.
This option would be the simplest to implement of the recommendations listed for consideration.
It is recommended that we change our method of processing brush using this recommendation.
Chippers or a cutter mill (discussed in a supplemental report) would be positioned to process brush
at the compost site. Brush would be picked up from the curb using a 24 -cubic yard open -top truck
with a grapple boom mounted on the front of the bid (see attached picture). Based on our use of
the excavator to pick up brush, we estimate picking up 50 -75 brush stops per day. This method
would allow brush to be removed from the right -of -way in 2 -2 '/z days per week. This would help
in eliminating brush on right -of -ways for extended periods. Brush would be chipped on site at the
compost site location.
The obvious disadvantage would be the cost of additional equipment and personnel, as covered on
the costs list.
(sanrecommend)
