Budget Committee Meeting
August 31, 1999
Page 6
Burgin said they were adding new personnel, and their bunker gear
now cost approximately $1,000.00 to buy a firefighter a coat, helmet,
pants, and everything that is required by the state for firefighting
purposes. Mr. Burgin said they started a program three years ago by
replacing twelve sets of those a year in order to place the bunker gear
on a rotation where they did not have to purchase all of those at one
time. The balance of the supply account is basic expenditures and
pointed out that he did increase the tire account because he has a
truck that is going to have to have tires replaced. Mr. Burgin informed the Committee that he is
using a firefighter at this time for additional code enforcement, and it
has nothing to do with fire, but it has got to be done. Mr. McWaters
pointed out that the City Council had just turned down the purchase of
wetsuits and diving equipment down. Mr. Burgin said yes, and we will
keep bringing it back because he thinks it is an entirely needed service
in the county. There is nobody else in this area that can do this. They
are highly trained, and highly skilled. They can recover drowned
victims, and law enforcement crime scene evidence that is under
