76 J <br />Mayor announced that the next item on the agenda was a public hearing <br />regarding the aquatic plant control program being considered for <br />Eurasian watermilfoil in June, 1987, on Pat Mayse Lake, and declared <br />the public hearing open. <br />Mayor Burnett called for proponents to appear and Paul Gray, Project <br />Manager at Pat Mayse Lake for the Army Corp of Engineers, appeared <br />before the Council and told the Council that the Corp of Engineers has <br />continued to have a problem with the Eurasian Watermilfoil at Pat Mayse <br />Lake, and it has reached the stage of causing serious problems with <br />public safety. Mr. Gray told the Council that due to the Eurasian <br />Watermilfoil, they feel it is necessary to enter into a management <br />program at Pat Mayse Lake. Mr. Gray said that the moss (Eurasian <br />Watermilfoil) grows along the shore lines in the shallow water where it <br />gets sunlight, as a result, the public can not use the shore lines, and <br />visitation drops. The Eurasian Watermilfoil effects boat motors, water <br />intake, and could break loose and get in the City's water pumps, also <br />when the Eurasian Watermilfoil gets to a level that we think it will, <br />we have a water quality problem here at Pat Mayse because it effects <br />the taste and odor of the water which in turn will increase the <br />treatment cost for the City of Paris. Mr. Gray said that they have <br />entered into a contract with the Department of Applied Sciences at <br />Northeast Texas University to study the growth of the Eurasian <br />Watermilfoil, and stated they had investigated several other alternates <br />to control the Eurasian Watermilfoil, but the most effective means of <br />controlling the moss is by a chemical program, and proposed to apply a <br />chemical treatment in the public use areas, Pat Mayse East, Pat Mayse <br />West, Sanders Cove, Lamar Point, and one swimming area, and requested <br />cooperation from the City of Paris. <br />Mayor Burnett called for opponents to appear and Michael Herron, 2032 <br />E. Price, President of the Paris Bass Club, appeared before the Council <br />and pointed out the importances of the Eurasian Watermilfoil in the <br />lake because it is a good habitat for Bass. Mr. Herron also pointed <br />out that Bass fishing tournaments brings in a considerable amount of <br />
