510 <br />SECTION 5 — PROBATION - NON -CIVIL SERVICE <br />SECTION 5.01— Purpose <br />The purpose of the probationary period is to provide the opportunity for the employee to become <br />adjusted to the new position, to determine if the employee likes the job and to evaluate the <br />employee's job performance. Department heads and supervisors will use the probationary period <br />to closely observe and evaluate the employee's work and to encourage adjustment to the job and the <br />City service. The immediate supervisor and/or department head will frequently discuss job <br />performance with each probationary employee so that the probationary employee knows if his/her <br />work is satisfactory. - <br />Each employee will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions covering performance evaluation <br />in Section 6 of these policies. <br />SECTION 5.02 - Probationary Period <br />Employees selected for appointment and/or promotion to a regular position must successfully <br />complete a probationary period of six (6) months. With the City Manager's approval the <br />probationary period may be extended a maximum of six (6) months. <br />SECTION 5.03 Status <br />Initial probationary employees will be eligible for all benefits and conditions of employment with <br />the exception of Health and Life Insurance which have a 90 day waiting period. Although <br />probationary employees accrue vacation leave, they are not eligible to take vacation leave until after <br />the probationary period. Employees who leave within the first year of employment will not be paid <br />for vacation leave balances. All personnel procedures, work rules and standards of conduct apply <br />to probationary employees. <br />SECTION 5.04 — Termination <br />A probationary employee may be terminated without prior notice or reason for termination. <br />16 <br />Revised 01 -25 -05 <br />
