Item 4b.
memorandum
TO: City Council
John Godwin, City Manager
FROM: Bob Hundley, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: STORM READY DESIGNATION BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
DATE: January 28, 2015
BACKGROUND: The National Weather Service designed StormReady to help communities
better prepare for and mitigate effects of extreme weather - related events. StormReady also helps
establish a commitment to creating an infrastructure and systems that will save lives and protect
property. Receiving StormReady recognition does not mean that a community is storm proof, but
StormReady communities will be better prepared when severe weather strikes.
STATUS OF ISSUE: The Paris Police department acts as the warning point for emergency
management in the city. Our methods of warning, our ability to receive weather related
information, our commitment to providing training and information to our community are all
vital components of the total ability to prepare for severe weather. By formally presenting our
information to the National Weather Service and making sure we meet all criteria, we have been
recognized by the NWS as a Storm Ready community. The city received this designation at the
Skywarn Seminar on January 26th.
BUDGET: No Impact to budget.
RECOMMENDATION: Presentation only.
