Item No. 17
memorandum
TO: Mayor & City Council
FROM: John Godwin, City Manager
SUBJECT: TRAIL DE PARIS RECONSTRUCTION
DATE: April 6, 2015
BACKGROUND: The section of the Trail de Paris between the loop and Collegiate is
deteriorating, with many cracks, and occasional bumps and other issues, including some related
to drainage. Councilman Plata has asked that we discuss scheduling some of the needed work
this year before the trail deteriorates further. This part of the trail is 7,203 feet long, and was
recently crack - sealed.
STATUS OF ISSUE: We have two basic options for trail work, both of which can be broken
down into smaller segments to spread costs out over more than one budget year. The first option
includes full prep, rock, and subgrade reconstruction by a contractor, and would total
approximately $181,000, or about $25 per linear foot. In addition the city would complete
grubbing and drainage repairs in -house at an additional cost of around $30,000, plus $1,800 for
restriping.
A lower cost option would be to overlay the existing trail with two inches of compacted hot mix
asphalt. The estimated price for this work is $116,000, or $16.00 per foot. This work, which is
more of a repair /maintenance approach, would still result in a high - quality surface, but with a
shorter life cycle (probably ten years) than the full reconstruction. We would spend the added
$31,800 for in -house costs regardless of which option is chosen.
BUDGET: Funds are not budgeted for this work.
RECOMMENDATION: Provide direction to staff.
