Item No. 11 memorandum TO: City Council John Godwin, City Manager FROM: Bob Hundley, Chief of Police SUBJECT: ABTPA GRANT APPLICATION FOR 2014 DATE: April 20, 2015 BACKGROUND: The City of Paris began the Northeast Texas Auto Theft Task Force, with the assistance of ABTPA, in September of 1994. Since that time, for 21 consecutive years, the City of Paris has been approved in continuing with the Task Force under this grant. There are two Paris police detectives assigned to the Task Force paid for by this grant. These officers are allowed to investigate auto thefts and auto burglaries in a number of counties in the Northeast Texas area. Many times, criminals operate beyond jurisdictional lines. STATUS OF ISSUE: The 2015 grant application is for the amount of $186,489.00. Council has to approve the application for the grant and authorize the manager to complete certain documents which must be submitted by May 22nd. The ABTPA requires a resolution from the governing body for the grant application. BUDGET: The grant application will require a $40,295.00 cash match along with a $1000.00 `in -kind match' in the 2015 -2016 police department budget. RECOMMENDATION: Motion to approve a resolution authorizing the grant application to the Automobile Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority for continuation of the Northeast Texas Auto Theft Task Force and authorizing the City Manager to execute all necessary documents.
