City Manager Malone <br />advised that study guides were issued to all applicants and free tutoring sessions <br />were held to assist applicants who wished to take the test. City Manager Malone <br />said one of the tutoring sessions was held at the NAACP office in Paris, two of the <br />tutoring sessions were held at Fire Station No. 1 training room and one black <br />candidate showed up for the tutoring sessions. City Manager Malone advised that <br />101 people took the test and 96 people passed the test. One black candidate took <br />the test and that person did not pass. City Manager Malone said since then Fire <br />Chief Burgin has contacted the officials at Paris Independent School regarding <br />teaching introduction to fire technology in order to generate interest in the fire <br />service. City Manager Malone said Code Enforcement Officer, Mike Alexander has <br />talked to many people in the minority community concerning fire service and taking <br />the fire entrance exam and several of the firemen who work for the City of Paris have <br />approached minorities to sign up and take the test. City Manager Malone said the <br />city would welcome any suggestions that anyone would like to offer that would <br />assist the city in recruiting all minorities to both Civil Service Departments. City <br />Manager Malone mentioned that on February 22, 1999 a exam for entry into the <br />police department will be given and generally the list will stand for a year. <br />After further discussion, Mayor Neeley asked Councilman Gray and Councilwoman <br />Fisher to co -chair a committee to meet with the City Manager and the Fire Chief and <br />see if they can try come up a way to get more minorities applicants for firefighters. <br />Mayor Neeley said he proposed to add additional people to this committee at a later <br />date. <br />There being no further business, the meeting adjourned. <br />r <br />CHARLES H.
