information on Mr. Hadley and the Kiamichi Railroad. Mr. Ross urged <br />the City of Paris to work with the Railroad. <br />Terry Christian, and Ronnie Abbott both appeared before the Council in <br />favor of the closing of Sherman Street. <br />Mayor Clifford called for those who were in opposition, and Mr. Mike <br />Folmar, representing a group of West Paris citizens, appeared before <br />the Council advising that West Sherman Street is one of the streets <br />that serves as access to Southwest Paris, and if this street is closed <br />it only gives us Bonham Street and West Washington Street for access. <br />Mr. Folmar said that effects them in several ways, one is access by <br />ambulance in going to hospitals, also Central Fire Station and Police <br />Station in case of emergencies. Mr. Folmar stated that no one was in <br />opposition to the progress of the railways, if they want to move. -their <br />operations south of West Washington Street, it would give them all the <br />space they need, but closing the street is depriving the citizens of <br />West Paris access down the street they have used. Mr. Folmar requested <br />the Council to leave West Sherman Street as it is. <br />Mr. Robert Sale, 420 18th S. W., was present voicing his objection to <br />the closing of West Sherman Street. Mr. Sale told the Council that he <br />and his daughter uses West Sherman Street every. day. Mr. Sale said <br />that if the street closing is passed, it would be his suggestion that <br />the Railroad build a street from Bonham Street to West Washington <br />Street through to 12th Street at their expense, and also to go to their <br />expense to widening W. Washington Street so it can handle the traffic. <br />Another objection Mr. Sale voiced was that West Washington Street dead <br />ends at 19th S. W. where West Sherman Street go on out into West <br />Paris. Mr. Sales advised that Campbell Soup has removed three tracks <br />that they do no use because they are using truck for means of shipping <br />products. <br />Mr. Roy Hargus appeared before the Council stating that he lives on <br />19th S. W., and he is opposed to the closing of West Sherman Street <br />- because of the increased traffic on West Washington Street. <br />No one else appeared, and Mayor Clifford declared the public hearing <br />closed. <br />City Manager Malone advised that an action item had been placed on the <br />agenda, and it would be presented later in the meeting. <br />City Manager called for consideration of an amendment to the <br />Circulation Plan of the City of Paris Comprehensive Plan, deleting <br />Sherman Street as a thoroughfare. A motion was made by Councilman <br />Fendley to proceed with the amendment to the Circulation Plan of the <br />City of Paris Comprehensive Plan, deleting Sherman Street as a <br />thoroughfare with the condition that the Railroad pay not in excess of <br />$5,000.00 to close West Sherman Street. The motion was seconded by <br />Councilman Booth, and failed with 3 ayes, 4 nays. Councilman Fendley, <br />Councilman Booth, and Mayor Clifford voting aye. <br />
