Item No. 16
memorandum
TO: Mayor & City Council
FROM: John Godwin, City Manager
SUBJECT: LAKE CROOK PARK
DATE: October 15, 2015
BACKGROUND: For some time the city council and others have discussed and even debated
future uses for Lake Crook. Although there has been a good bit of disagreement, one thing that
the city's adopted plan calls for, and that I think most others have agreed with, is that the existing
developed park area should remain and that it should be significantly improved. This would
encourage the use of one of the city's greatest assets.
STATUS OF ISSUE: More recently, due to the chuck wagon races and the very well - attended
speed boat races at the lake, parks department employees, volunteers, and community service
workers did a significant amount of work clearing and cleaning the area. Those improvements
were very well received. Both of the race events plan to return to Paris in 2016, but in the
meantime it may be a very good idea to invest in some of the hardscape there too, such as a new
playground, picnic areas, improvements to the pavilion, trails, etc.
BUDGET: Dr. Swint donated $100,000, which is available for park improvements.
RECOMMENDATION: Discussion only; provide direction to staff.
