Item No. 25
Memorandum
TO: City Council
John Godwin, City Manager
FROM: Larry Wright, Fire Chief
SUBJECT: Fire Truck Purchase
DATE: 11 -16 -15
BACKGROUND: As discussed last year, the Fire Department fleet has been neglected for
several years. The normal life span of a fire truck is 10 years front line and 10 years reserve. Last
year we had two fire trucks that were still front line after17 years of service They are reaching
the end of their use, even as a reserve engine. Costly repairs and dependability have increase in
the past five years. Last year the City Council approved the purchase of a fire truck to replace
one of the aging in- service trucks and were told at that time that this year the next truck would
have to be replaced. By staggering the purchase, the trucks will not have to be replaced all at
once. This purchase will give the Fire Department three new apparatus with the oldest being
three years old.
STATUS OF ISSUE: The Fire Department, in order to maintain a fleet of dependable fire
apparatus, needs to specify and order a fire truck to replace an existing one which is 17 years old.
If ordered this fall delivery would not be until the Fall of 2016, and first payment would not be
due until one year from order placement. This first payment would be in 2016 -2017 budget.
BUDGET: Capital Expense of $975,000 with payments spread over ten years.
RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council approve the purchase of a
replacement fire truck.
