Item No. 25
memorandum
TO: Mayor & City Council
FROM: John Godwin, City Manager
SUBJECT: LAKE CROOK PARK
DATE: February 1, 2016
BACKGROUND: The city staff and others have evaluated options and cost estimates for
improvements to the park this spring and summer. The major options we have discussed are a
new playground ($80,000 +) and a restroom ($70,000 +), although we do not have enough funds
for both, and public restrooms in areas like this can carry very high liability. We also talked
about adding picnic tables and grills, replacing our old swings, creating camping sites, and
completing additional clearing. We also want to consider changing existing ordinances that
prohibit water sports and overnight camping at the lake.
STATUS OF ISSUE: We believe creating a citizen committee —with one member each
appointed by the council members —would provide a focus for citizen input, and maybe even
generate additional donations. The committee would report back to the council in fairly short
order so that improvements can be completed before the chuck wagon and speedboat races in
July /August.
BUDGET: $110,000 is available.
RECOMMENDATION: Appoint a citizens' committee to receive input and report back to the
council with its recommendations.
