Meeting minutes for January 13, 2021 were approved by acclamation
Action was taken on the following Certificates of Appropriateness:
a. 255 SW 1st Street, South Main Iron, Motorcycle Sales- Garage doors.
Marvin Gorley presented the certificate of appropriateness on behalf of Harrison,
Walker and Harper. South Main Iron had a previous certificate of appropriateness that had
expired. There has been some considerable changes in the requested design, so a new
certificate of appropriateness was submitted. The current certificate of appropriateness is
addressing the east facing fagade of the building that opens to South Main Street. The current
fagade consists of what was historically three (3) garage openings that have been filled in
with haddock blocks and painted. The applicant is requesting removal of all haddock block
infill in all three openings down to the original structural brick. The new construction
consists of wooden telescoping doors on the north and south openings, and a recessed
storefront entry in the center all construction will be of wood and glass. A 1934 historic
photo was submitted and on file. A photo rendering was submitted with the certificate of
appropriateness along with the following description:
Garage Door Dimensions (North and South openings): Each opening will be filled with four 9 -foot
panels. The panels on the outside edges do not move. Three panels in each opening telescope into
a pocket behind one stationary panel. They are designed to line up when stacked so that the glass
is aligned. Each garage door panel has four pieces of glass, two transom panes and two large panes.
Horizontal mullions are 10 inches wide. Vertical mullions are 8 inches wide. Transom glass panes
are 2 -foot by 3.5 -foot. Large glass panes ore 8 -foot by 3.5 -foot.
Central Store Front: Mullions and glass are the same as on garage door panels except for the doors.
The transom window above the main doors will be stationary so the doors will be approximately 9 -
foot tall instead of 12 -foot tall
Commissioner Long made a motion to approve the application as presented. Motion was
seconded by Commissioner Vandiver. Motion carried.
b. 123 Bonham St. Storefront Rehabilitation: Jeff Faber was present to represent the
certificate of appropriateness and asked the commission if they had questions.
Commissioner Caffey helped with presentation of the project. She worked with the
applicant to mitigate the previous fagade and develop an appropriate storefront. The
applicant discovered evidence of a prior wooden storefront while rebuilding. This was
prior to the midcentury metal framing that existed before 2020 renovations. The framing
showed signs of deterioration.
The proposed store front includes a 4 inch divide between two display glasses on either
side of the recessed entry. Wood pilasters will frame a 3/ inch double door with a glass
transoms above the doorway. After discussion from the commissioners a motion was
made by Commissioner Coyle to approve the application as presented, and seconded by
Commissioner Emmite. Motion carried 5-0, with Commissioners Caffey and Matthews
abstaining.
Mr. Faber requested a $2500 50150% matching fagade grant for the rehabilitation of 123
Bonham. Commissioner Coyle made a motion to approve the fagade grant request. The
motion was seconded by Commissioner Emmite. Motion carried 7-0
Corrections to the Historic Preservation Rules of Procedure were reviewed. A motion was
made to adopt the Rules of Procedure by Commissioner Vandiver, seconded by
Commissioner Long. Motion carried 7-0
The Commission reviewed a portion of the Historic Preservation Ordinance.
Commissioner Emmite made the request to add education to the future agenda.
Hearing no other items, a motion was made to adjourn at 4:38 p.m. by Commissioner Caffey,
seconded by Commissioner Vandiver. Motion carried
