SUBJECT: Funding Lake Crook Boat Dock with City's Hotel Occupancy Tax

BACKGROUND:
Earlier this year, the City and the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce partnered to fund a new
boat ramp at Lake Crook with the City paying 80% and the Lamar County Chamber of Commerce
paying 20% of the project cost. Both organizations utilized Hotel Occupancy Tax to fund this
project.
After the ramp project was completed, a boat dock was purchased and installed next to the ramp
to improve this area even more.
STATUS OF ISSUE:
The boat dock had a total cost of $9,480, with $4,740 paid up front and the remaining $4,740 paid
upon delivery, all of these funds were taken out of a line item in the Public Works, Parks and
Recreation budget. With the intention of the boat dock to compliment the boat ramp project and
improve a space that would better accommodate events like the Jet Ski races and the Southern
Drag Boat Association races held in the summer, the opportunity to use funds from the Hotel
Occupancy Tax was a possibility. After speaking with City Attorney Stephanie Harris, it was
determined this would be an acceptable use for the City's portion of this fund. Lamar County
Chamber of Commerce President, Paul Allen, was also consulted and he provided the City with a
letter indicating his organization had no objections to the City using these funds in this manner.
BUDGET: The City will basically be reimbursing itself with the Hotel Occupancy tax and $9,480
will go back into the line item in the Public Works, Parks and Recreation budget.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve Hotel Occupancy Tax funds to be used to fund the cost of the boat dock - $9,480.00.

The Lamar County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors and Convention Council fully approve of
the floating dock as being part of the Boat Ramp Project at Lake Crook. The improvements of
that location will help secure multiple events that will bring visitors into Paris, Texas. We agree
that the Hot Tax can be used for these improvements.
