Item No. 25
TO: Mayor
Mayor Pro Tem
City Council
FROM: Deputy City Manager Robert G. Vine
SUBJECT: Informational Item Regarding Power Lines
DATE: December 11, 2023
BACKGROUND:
During the recent Town Hall Meetings, some citizens expressed concerns with trees on or near
power lines, power or cable lines down, broken telephone poles and other concerns regarding
power lines.
STATUS OF ISSUE:
City staff met with representatives of Oncor and with Optimum and discussed down lines, power,
cable or telephone and other issues related to utility lines, specifically power. Oncor shared
information from their Marketing Division regarding how and when citizens can report down
power lines, limbs close to or touching power lines, broken telephone poles and street lights needed
or not functioning. This information was shared with newly hired Public Information Officer Jon
McFadden who created a space on the city's website to provide this information to those looking
for it. We are continuing our conversations with Optimum and attempting to have conversations
with AT&T. Given the City does not maintain or regulate these lines, and given the inherent danger
associated with electric power lines, the City is refraining from creating its own educational
material, but rather deferring all educational matters to that of the third party companies.
At the bequest of Mayor Hughes and Mayor Pro Tem Pankaj, this was added to tonight's agenda
to help educate the council and public.
We would like to present to the council an addition to our city website we have prepared that
provides the public with information regarding third party utility lines.
