1990-034-RES WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Paris that the late Paris native, Jerry Bywaters was an painter, RESOLUTION NO. 90-034 WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Paris is aware that the late Paris native, Jerry Bywaters was an esteemed painter, professor of art, and museum director, who continues to be known for his striking portraits, Texas landscapes, and the focus he brought to southwestern regional art with his enormous talent, served as Director of the Dallas Museum of Art for more than twenty years and art professor at Southern Methodist University for over forty years; and WHEREAS, in 1934, as a Public Works of Art Project commission, he created four historic oil panels for the Paris Public Library, entitled "John Chisum", Davy Crockett", "Paris Fire, 1916", and "Reconstruction", which have always hung in prominent positions in the Paris Public Library; and WHEREAS, on February 25, 1990, an exhibit of Jerry Bywaters' paintings featuring the four panels which were off i cia 11 y red e d i cat e d and 47 0 f his ma j or w 0 r k s 0 far t , including oils, watercolors, pastels, and lithographs, opened for a three-week showing in the Library Gallery; and, WHEREAS, Jerry's children, Richard P. Bywaters and Jerry Bywa ter s Cochr an, generous ly gave the Par is Publ ic L i br ary the marvelous oil painting "In the Public Library", in honor of the artist's parents: Hattie Williamson Bywaters, born in Honey Grove, Texas, and Porter Ashburn Bywaters, Sr., born in Roxton, Texas; and, WHEREAS, it would be right and proper to accept the gift on behalf of the Paris Public Library; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PARIS, that the Deed of Gift from the Jerry Bywaters Estate, attached hereto as Exhibit A, be, and the same is hereby accepted in behalf of the Paris Public Library. The identification of this painting in the Jerry Bywaters Estate inventory is given as: BYW.1. 41. 0001 In the Public Library (old man), 1941 oil/canvas 30" X 34" SDLR restor. appraised value: $6,500.00 This gift is being made in honor of the artist's parents: Hattie Williamson Bywaters (born in Honey Grove, Texas) and Porter Ashburn Bywaters, Sr. (born in Roxton, Texas) Both lived in Paris and raised two boys, Jerry and Porter Jr., from about 1900 to 1917. We request that the identification marker for this painting reflect that this gift is in honor of the artist's parents, who encouraged him to pursue his dream, a career in art. The donors will retain the right to borrow the painting for brief periods, for purposes of art shows, photographic reproduction, or other purposes that would provide favorable exposure of this painting. Details of each such "loan-back" would be worked out on a case-by-case basis, with emphasis on the care and security of the painting. We do hereby confirm this gift to the Paris Public Library on this day, the 15th day of March, 1990.
