Description of Project:
The centerpiece af Bywaters Park (300 South Main) is the 1931 peristyle, which mimics
the unique style of a Grecian temple. The peristyle is a beautiful and popular backdrop
for many community events, including the Paris Municipal Band's summer concert
series, weddings, Crepe Myrtle Queen coronation, and movies in the park.
Unfortunately, over time the foundation of the structure has shifted, causing the columns
and entablature on all three sides to lean at various angles and crack as well as cause
the flooring to be very uneven. In January 2004, two of the columns were replaced but
the underlying problem with the foundation was not addressed. Two of the columns on
the south side had to have bracing placed on them in an effort to stabilize those
columns. The structure continues to deteriorate and the safety of the peristyle will
become an issue if the foundation is not addressed soon. The proposed projeet will
include (1) cleaning, patching, and repairing column and step stone, (2) resurFacing and
replacing column and step joints, (3) replacement of column pieces as needed, (4)
replacement of badly damaged stone steps, (5) replacement of inner stage flooring, (6)
review and reinforcement of wall piers under steps and support structures, (7)
dismantling and reassembly of structure as required, (8) repair or replace electrical, and
(9) evaluation and possible installation of additional audio and electrical facilities.
Estimabed cost of project or amount of support requested: $132,000 total cost;
$66,000 support requested.
