POLICY ISSUE(S):
Public Health
Dr. Debra Cherry and UT Health Sciences Center Tyler were recently awarded a DSHS Transforming
Texas grant for Lamar and Hopkins counties. Transforming Texas is a five-year, federally-funded
initiative supporting communities, workplaces, schools and health care providers to reduce chronic
disease and lower the cost of care through the power of prevention. Over the next five years, research-
based practices and policies, including environmental, programmatic and infrastructure changes, will be
implemented in 30 Texas counties to help create healthier communities. This initiative supports
interventions aimed at prevention of heart attacks, strokes, cancer and other leading causes of death or
disability. The overarching goals of the grant are to:
• Reduce death and disability due to tobacco use by 5%
• Reduce the rate of obesity through nutrition and physical activity interventions by 5%
• Reduce death and disability due to heart disease and stroke by 5%
Locally, they are partnering with the Paris-Lamar County Health Department and the Lamar County
Coalition of Education, Business and Industry. Dr. Cherry will also working with Earl Erickson and city
planners to increase use of the Trail de Paris and support Safe Routes to School. Dr. Cherry has
discussed the possibility of this grant funding an update to the City of Paris Parks Master Plan. She has a
brief presentation to familiarize the Council with this program.
