2058 RES CRAPE MYRTLE HAS BEEN PART OF HISTORY OF COP SINCE 1867P.ESOLUi ION ;IO . 2058
WHEREAS, the Crape Myrtle has been a part of the history
of the City of Paris since 1867 when a Crape Myrtle from
Kentucky was planted on the south side of the Sam Bell Maxey
Home; and,
W'HEREAS, the Crape Yiyrtle has been gro:ninent on the Paris
scene since 1935 when Pat Mayse encouraged the planting of
Crape P-7yrtles in anticipation of tourist traffic attending the
Texas Centennial in 1936; and,
WHEREAS, the Crape Myrtle Committee of the Paris Council
of Garden Clubs was organized for the purpose of Crape Myrtle
beautification in Paris and Lamar County in 1967; and,
G7IIEREAS, the City Council of t'tae City of Paris has been
requested by the Crape Plyrtle Committee, Paris Council oi
Garden Clubs, Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee,
Tree Preservation Committee for the City of Paris, Down.town
Development Association, and Visitors and Convention Council
that the Crape Myrtle be desig-iiated as the official flower of
the City of Paris; and,
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Paris finds that
it is appropriate and fitting the the Crape Myrtle be desig-
nated the of ficial flower of the City of Paris, Texas ; NOIJ,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIIa Or TI'i, CITY OF PARIS,
That the Crape Myrtle, be, and t:ae same is hereby desionated
the official flower of ttze City of Paris, Texas.
