Tom Nuegent, Assistant Band Director
Chairman Edmond Castleberry called the meeting to order at 4:05 p.m.
Mr. Nuegent gave a report on the 2001 Municipal Band season and list several concerns
he had with future season. Among these were:
1. Instruments. The municipal band borrows instruments from Paris High School.
During June of each year most high school band directors send
the large instruments such as tubas, baritones, French horns, etc
to be repaired before the next school year. These instruments
are not always available for the municipal band to use.
2. Chairs.
The chairs used during the 2001 season were borrowed from
Justiss Elementary School. During the course of the 2001 season
7 chairs have been reported missing.
Recommendation:
The City of Paris needs to replace these chairs and consider
purchasing approximately 70-75 chairs for future seasons.
3. Stands.
Folding stands would reduce transportation requirements and
would be easily stored.
Recommendation:
The City of Paris needs to consider purchasing approximately 50
folding stands.
4. Concert Season. Needs to be revised due to temperature, availability of
qualified high school students who participate in the band,
start of high school band practices, and conflicts with vacation
schedule of both student and adult participants.
Recommendation:
Year round schedule to include:
4 concerts during June and July
1 concert during November
1 concert during January of February
5. Music Library. Needs extensive work to sort and re-catalog the contents of the
library. Most of the filing cabinets and storage lockers are in
disrepair or need replacing.
6. Adult musicians. There are not enough active adults musicians in this area
that participate.
7. Mr. Nuegent's Time. More hours than were anticipated were required to
organize the 2001 season.
Following Mr. Nuegent's report Dr. James Brunette and Edmond Castleberry agreed to
meet with City officials on Monday, August 20, 2001 to discuss availability of chairs.
After a lengthy discussion, it was recommended that bandmembers receive $25 per
concert.
Also of concern was the future availability of the PHS facilities.
Following a review of budget line items, a motion made by Albert Nichol, seconded by
Dr. James Brunette, passed unanimously that the proposed 2002 budget be revised to
$19,952. The budget is attached and made a part of these minutes.
In other action, a motion made by Dr. James Brunette, seconded by Albert Nichol,
passed unanimously appointing Mr. Tom Nuegent as Director of the Paris Municipal
Band beginning with the 2002 season. A letter will be composed by Edmond Castleberry
and signed by all commission members will be sent to Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Weger to
inform them of this change.
With no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
