MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE LIBRARY
ADVISORY BOARD
August 15, 2001
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session
Wednesday, August 15. 2001, at 4PM in the Library with Chairman Jackie
Alsobrook presiding. The following members were present: Jackie
Alsobrook, Sarah Gambill, Anna Davis, Fran Neeley, John Howison.
Absent were Walter Williams, Nancee Salzman, Curtis Fendley, Rogene
Patterson, and Callie Thompson, Friends President. Also attending was
Betty Landon, Director of Paris Public Library.
The July 18, 2001 Minutes were approved.
Jackie Alsobrook welcomed Betty Landon as the new Library Director.
The budget report was distributed. Betty stated that the current budget
needed to be spent or encumbered by September 30, 2001. Buying books
was a priority, as $50,000 still needed to be spent in that area. Some chairs
had been ordered, irreparable videos were being replaced, and some
shelving money needed to be spent.
The July Statistical Report showed that an increase in circulation of
10.8% occurred in July from last year at the same time. Electronic
reference was up and Interlibrary Loan was down. Volunteer hours were
up by 3.7% and memorial donations were up.
Children's Services did not have a float in the 4th of July parade. Seven
programs were presented to school age children, with 118 children
attending and 23 adults. Four programs were presented to preschool age
children with 146 children attending and 60 adults.
In the Adult Outreach program, 1,124 books and 230 audio books were
circulated. Two reading presentations programs were given at Heritage
Care and Sterling House. The Mobile Library Summer Reading Service
served a total of 1,406 children and 418 adults for the summer.

The Nominating Committee report was submitted by John Howison. The
follo~ving are the nesv officers for the Library Board: Nancee Salzman as
Chairman, Sarah Gambill as Vice Chairman, and Anna Davis as
Secretary. Fran Neeley moved to accept this report and John Howison
seconded the motion.
New board members nominated, subject to appointment by the Mayor and
Council approval are Peggy Guthrie and Vickie Terlap.
No report was given by the Friends of the Library,
Betty Landon, Director of Paris Public Library, stated that the staff was
adjusting well. Some budget cuts had to be made for the upcoming fiscal
year. Betty plans to have the library open on Mondays if the budget
allows, which would make the library open 6 days a week. The collection
needs weeding and organizing. She plans to weed on a monthly basis. She
wants the library to purchase two strollers, similar to those used in
shopping malls, for the use of patrons. Library policies need to be updated
and staff training has been scheduled in Excel spreadsheet.
The meeting adjourned at 5:00 pm. The next Board meeting will be
September 19, 2001 at 4:00 PM in the Library.
