09-A Library Advisory BoardMINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD September 19, 2001 The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session Wednesday, September 19, 2001, at 4PM in the Library with Chairman Nancee Salzman presiding. The following members were present: Anna Davis, Peggy Guthrie, Fran Neeley, John Howison, Nancee Salzman, Vicki Terlap, Callie Thompson, Friends President and Betty Landon, Library Director. Not attending were Sarah Gambill and Walter Williams. The August 15, 2001 Minutes were approved. Nancee Salzman welcomed Peggy Guthrie and Vicki Terlap as new members. The budget report was distributed. Betty stated that the library is still under budget for this fiscal year, with $90,000 remaining. They are still ordering books and audio/visual materials to finish spending the book budget. The August Statistical Report showed that overall circulation was up 3.4% Juvenile circulation for August was lower than the previous August. Electronic reference assistance was up, and interlibrary loan was down. Twenty memorials were given which totaled $398. Volunteer hours were up and library visits were down slightly. Children's Services issued the Billy Book schedule through October. Bill Kennedy will be doing Billy Book again this year. The new Children's schedule is beginning with a Birthday Program on September 25. The Toddler program will begin in October. Billy Book will be at the Children's Festival on October 27, which will be held on the Plaza. Children's Services will host a booth at this event, which will include crafts. In the Adult Outreach Program, 1169 books were circulated, 358 audio books, 407 videos, and 31 magazines, and 40 interlibrary loans. Programs were presented at Heritage Care, Sterling House and Paris Oaks, with a total of 48 attending. There were 60 volunteer hours. There was no old business. Library Advisory Board September 19, 2001 Page 2 In New Business, Keith Williamson was nominated as a candidate for board member, replacing Curtis Fendley. His name was submitted by Betty Landon after a suggestion from Priscilla McAnally. John Howison suggested promoting library materials dealing with current world affairs. Friends of the Library president, Callie Thompson, stated that the Friends Luncheon would be held on October 1, 2001. People can also renew their Friends membership when they sign up for the luncheon. Betty Landon, Library Director, stated that new blinds had been installed today on the east windows. The Library will begin updating library cards in January of 2002. A Library Advocacy workshop will be held in Texarkana on September 25. John Howison and Betty Landon will attend the NETLS quarterly meeting on October 9 in Mineola. The Paris Public Library will participate in the TexShare program sponsored by the Texas State Library beginning November 30, 2001. This will enable our patrons to use other participating libraries and check out materials. In January, 2002, the library will receive direct state aid of about $7,000. The two part-time positions at the library become full-time October 1, 2001. Betty is working on scheduling now to begin operating six days a week. The library is beginning a cd collection of audio books. Strollers have been shipped, 2 for toddlers, 1 for infants. TLA district meeting will be held this Saturday in Tyler, with Priscilla McAnally attending. Betty will be speaking to the Lion's Club on October 11. The work on revising library policies has begun. The motion to adjourn the meeting was made by John Howison and seconded by Peggy Guthrie. The meeting adjourned at 4:55 pm. The October meeting will be on the 17th, at 4 pm in the Library Gallery.
