MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE LIBRARY
ADVISORY BOARD
December 19, 2001
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session
Wednesday, December 19, 2001, at 4:00 PM in the Library with Vice
Chairman John Howison presiding. The following members were present:
Sarah Gambili, Anna Davis, Vicki Terlap, Walter Williams, Fran Neeley
and John Howison. Also attending were Callie Thompson, Friends
President and Betty Landon, Library Director. Not attending were Nancee
Salzman, Peggy Guthrie, and Keith Williamson.
The October 17, 2001 minutes were approved.
The budget looks good. The only surprise was the payment of
unemployment benefits to Cynthia, which caused a negative rigure in the
budget.
The November Statistical Report showed an increase in circulation,
reference, electronic reference and interlibrary loan. Program attendance
was down because of fewer programs presented. Library visits were up.
Children's Services showed that 10 programs were held with 129 children
attending and 69 adults. There were 19 Preschool programs presented with
250 children attending and 57 adults.
In the Adult Outreach program, three nursing home programs were
presented.
Several items under new business were discussed, with Vicki Terlap
addressing these: (1) There is a need for programs for Kindergarten
children after school. They cannot meet during the daytime programs
because of kindergarten attendance and are too young for the school age
activities. Betty Landon will look into this and bring recommendations to
the board. (2) Vicki brought a suggestion from her Book Club that it
would be nice to bring authors to the Paris area. It was suggested that an
author group be started with Vicki to lead the group at the library in the
Gallery area. Book Club brochures were aiso suggested for the Library to

have available to make people aware of the book clubs in existence in the
Paris area. Betty mentioned that there were some Humanities grants
available to bring authors to libraries. (3) Vicki also suggested that the
Library have Staff Picks, where the staff would choose books which they
have enjoyed and display for the patrons.
There was no unfinished business.
Callie Thompson, Friends President, stated that they had purchased 20 die
cuts for the Children's Department and a case to store them. The Friends
Luncheon raised $1,900. For the spring luncheon, they are trying to book
an author or book reviewer.
Betty Landon, Library Director, stated that she and John Howison
attended a NETLS meeting in Garland on December 5. Betty won a 17"
computer monitor as a door prize. It is now in use at a public internet
station. She also stated that the State Direct Aid for the Paris Library
would be $6254.00 She hopes to put that money with the remaining bond
money and purchase automatic doors for the entrance. They are putting
all the large print books together. The book weeding process has begun to
make more room on the shelves. There was water leakage in the magazine
and children's area from last weekend rains. Eleven volunteers who help
nearly every day were each given a gift certificate for Chili's. Betty stated
that on January 15`, a database will be available to practice for
standardized tests such as GED, Real Estate, ACT, SAT, Fireman's
examination, etc. This can be done at the library on the internet or at
home with the patron's library card number.
The meeting adjourned at 5:15 p.m. The next meeting will be held on
January 16, 2002 at 4:00 p.m. in the Gallery.
