Meeting Minutes
September 18, 2013
Opening:
The regular meeting of the Paris Public Library Advisory Board was called to order at 4:15 p.m.
Present:
Board members presents were Pat Books, Judith Kimbrough, Fran Neeley, Ann Norment, Linda
Vandiver, and Alice Woodard. Priscilla McAnally, library director was also present. Absent was
Connie Dodd.
I. Approval of Minutes
The minutes of the previous meeting were unanimously approved as presented.
II. New Business:
A. Adult Programming Ideas: Alice Woodard offered to give a 4 -6 week course on short
fiction for singles. A writing program for parents and grandparents on how to write their
memoirs for their children was also suggested, as was a program on recording oral
history. An author book signing with Paris native Jay Morris and his new book Red
Neck Opera Singer was proposed. Also an essay project "This I Believe ", begun in the
1950s and is now done on NPR, was recommended by Ann Norment.
B. The staff is checking the shelves for long overdue materials. A few have been found on
the shelves. The items not found will be charged to patrons' accounts and withdraw
from the system. Some of the items will be replaced — depending on demand of item and
relevancy to the collection. It is hoped the project will be completed by the end of
October.
III. Old Business
No old business was present.
IV. Presentations
A. Budget Report:
A balance of $6,576 is left in the Materials line of the budget. Most, if not all, will spend
by the end of the fiscal year
B. Statistical Report:
Circulation and visits were down a bit, but the children's attendance is up despite having
two fewer programs then August 2012.
V. Friends of the Library
None given
F. Director's Remarks
Ms. McAnally is investigating Overdrive, a service that provides downloadable e -books and
audios to library patrons much like the Freading and OneClickDigital already in use by library
patrons. An advantage to Overdrive is that is works with the earlier Kindle reading devices and a
great many patrons have asked about such a service.
The next meeting will be October 16, and Ms. McAnally will give a demonstration of some
of the electronic resources offered by the library.
