03-F Main Street (11/19/03)MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF
MAIN STREET ADVISORY BOARD
WEDNESDAY, November 19, 2003, 3:00 P.M.
50 WEST HICKORY STREET
1. Present Board Members:
Patsy Davis, Bailey Gant, Zach Saffle, David House, Cari
Johnson, Suzy Harper
Absent Board Members:
Barbara Wilson, Pike Burkhart Sr., Renee Harvey, Linda Suarez,
Karen Wilkerson
2. Discuss Streetscape Project/ Street Lighting: Lindsey Harper
handed out Streetscape specs. for the antique street lamps which
are to be installed during the project. More electricity will be on
hand to supply more lights on the plaza than in past years. Suzy
Harper and Cari Johnson suggested more lights on the plaza for
Christmas decorations; however, Lindsey Harper confirmed that
the amount of electricity needed is not present to date.
3. Discuss Downtown Trash Pick-Up Solutions: Lindsey Harper
discussed with the board her conversations with Waste
Management and Trashy Business. Waste Management implied
that it would too difficult to coordinate with all the downtown
merchants a solution to the trash problem downtown. One or two
dumpsters located on the plaza would not be aesthically pleasing
nor would the merchants want to haul their trash to a centrally
located dumpster. Also, the concern of the community using the
dumpster for their personal trash disposal was brought up by
David House. Lindsey Harper reported that Trashy Business is
interested in picking up all the merchant's trash on the plaza but
the merchants still would be charged individually and a set
amount each month is not reasonable since every merchant has
different amounts of trash. Lindsey Harper is planning to meet
with a rep from Trashy Business in early December to explore

other solutions to the problem.
4. Review and Discuss Christmas Decorations: Cari Johnson and
Lindsey Harper discussed the events that are to take place on the
plaza on December 11 and December 18 from Spm - 8pm. The
merchants will stay open late and will serve refreshments as
various local choirs perform on the square. The Santa Hut has
been moved from Bywaters Park to the square for the holiday
season and santa will be present on the two Thursday evenings in
order for children to have their pictured made with him. The
Downtown Merchant Association is sponsoring this event in
hopes of bringing a diverse group of people to the plaza. Also,
Lindsey Harper reported on the decorations that the merchants
had agreed on for the plaza. Lighted wreaths and Christmas
ornaments will be put up and the four cedar trees around the
fountain will be decorated. Again, Lindsey Harper stated that
the lack of electricity will be greatly improved and more can be
done after the Streetscape project is complete.
5. Meeting adjourned at 4:15 pm and the board members indicated
that many will not be able to make a meeting in December;
therefore, the next Mainstreet meeing will be held January 14tn
at 3:00 pm.
