Lamar CounhJ Historical Commission

July 19, 1999

Mr. Rick Massey
Texas Department of Transportation
1356 North Main Street
Paris, Texas, 75460

Dear Sir:

I am writing this letter to assure you that the Lamar County Historical Commission
enthusiasticaUy endorses the grant application of St. Joseph's Hospital and the City of
Paris for funds to restore the Red Ball Bus Station, also referred to as the Annex of the
Gibralter Hotel. The Gibralter Hotel area is pivotal in the ongoing preservation plans of
the City of Paris and wlll be a capstone in the final development. This wiD revitalize the
downtown area and restore and improve a now blighted building. During an era of
development of the commerce of Lamar County, bus transportation played a vital role.
The earliest bus tenoinal was indeed the present building in question and remained a very
active part until replaced by other means of transportation after a great many years of
service.

The Commission is well aware of all of the historical buildings in the area, and assuredly
this building is of prime importance to the grand plan for downtown. It certainly deserves
every consideration for restoration.

Sincerely yours,

1i::trh.*en, MD
~1Uov . ~ ~7 dfu'",J Cmr...~

'__LLd"O.'~_'
