No. 21 <br />011,111, 71110, Eff VIM V <br />'Id <br />TO: City Council <br />John Godwin, City Manager <br />FROM: Bob Hundley, Chief of Police <br />SUBJECT: ORDINANCE 26-6, POLICE ASSIGNMENT PAY <br />DATE: January 2, 2018 <br />BACKGROUND: Ordinance 26-6 provides for 'assignment pay' for positions in the police <br />department in accordance with Civil Service law. The department provides this additional <br />compensation for duties which are above and beyond the job description for the position <br />assigned. Ordinance 26-6 provides additional compensation for Field Training Officers, Dispatch <br />Trainers, ("anine (K-9) Officer, assistant commander, Drug Task Force and the Crime Prevention <br />Unit. <br />STAT .JS OF ISSUE: The police department has two teams of officers who respond to very. <br />specific ]Incidents which require additional training, skills and certification. Those being the <br />SWAT / Hostage Negotiation Unit and the Accident Reconstruction Unit. When fully staffed, <br />these units will have a maximum ot'20 positions. Presently, we have 15 officers participating in <br />these teams with openings in both, I I he assignment pay for the canine officer along with the <br />drug task force coininander portions of the ordinance should be deleted. The canine officer is <br />compensated by work schedule allowances and the assistant commander of the drug task force <br />no longer exists. <br />BUDGET: We are asking that each officer on these teams be afforded an additional $87.50 per <br />month ($1050.00 per year) for participation. The cost of implementing the additional pay for the <br />remainder of the current fiscal year is $10,500.00. There is no cost to the budget for deletion of <br />the canine officer position and the drug task force commander position, <br />RECOMMENDATION: Approve the amended ordinance. <br />
