Nicholson showed a map to board members explaining where the hangar that was just
built is located and that we can put four more hangars on the side of it which would give
a total of 8. He further states what we have submitted is a plan along the taxiway.
Ray Ball states he understands we are already putting planes in the new hangars. Jerry
Richey advised those are all rented and there is one open hanger left that nobody wants.
8. Open forum to discuss ideas for the airport.
Ray Ball states that we need to try to stimulate business growth at the airport and be
listening for opportunities to try to convince them to move out there and to do their
business out there. He states space has been a problem all along, inadequate hangars etc.
but if board members hear of business wanting to move to a different airport then we
need to pursue.
John Godwin advised that because of the open meetings act you have to be careful with
how you word certain agenda items because an open forum is not a legal agenda item.
Open forum means you can talk about anything and a person that wants to come to your
meeting is not going to know what you're talking about. The open meetings act is a state
law and he is obligated to advise. Also, that discussion amongst three or four board
members where you are looking over something, you can't do that because if public was
here they cannot hear or see what is being discussed.
Mr. Godwin states that on August 9, 2018 there is a required board member orientation
for all new boards and commissions at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers.
David Taylor states let me make a perspective on this new business idea with the airports
that he has been around over the years there are two prongs to attracting new business,
one is existing buildings that are derelict, abandoned. Another option is brand new
structures so this idea that Mr. Bell brought up about attracting federal money is viable to
consider.
John Godwin states the Master Airport Plan is available on the City website and it has the
priorities and that includes things like taxiways, safety, lights and signs etc. Businesses
want to come to places that look well maintained and up-to-date. Once you have more
activities, enough flights, take offs etc. more business will open up.
Mr. Taylor states he knows we just moved from the one topic earlier when looking at
maps but he did want to ask if someone is familiar with the history of why for 50 or 60
years we left all of that right-of-way near that active taxiway open for that purpose and
put the hangars back in the hangar complex and how we sort of shifted gears because
there is still a safety concern. John Godwin states the only reason we are looking to doing
something different now is because someone came along and said I want to build a big
hangar and I want it to be over here and we didn't want to come out saying no we're not
going to do it. We wanted to talk to them so that's what we are doing. Then from that
