Item No. 26
M%olm''I'"A"Im
TO: City Council
Gene Anderson, Interim City Manager
FROM: Randy Tuttle, Assistant Chief of Police
SUBJECT: STOP SIGNS
DATE: January 08, 2020
BACKGROUND: During design of the Church Street improvements, requests were made by
residents along Church Street for additional traffic control devices thought to reduce speeds as
well as deter through traffic. While stop signs are not an effective or recommended way to reduce
traffic speeds, they do allow for safer pedestrian crossings. Because the Downtown Plan
recommends that Sherman Street be expanded as a priority east -west corridor, with improved
sidewalks links from 3rd SE, downtown, Heritage Park and the future Trail de Paris, staff supports
the installation of stop signs on Church Street that will accommodate a safe and pronounced
pedestrian crossing at Sherman.
STATUS OF ISSUE: On January 07, 2020 the City of Paris Traffic Commission considered this
issue and voted to request the City Council consider placing stop signs for north and south traffic
at Church & Sherman creating the four way stop.
BUDGET: Estimated cost of $200.00 from current budget
RECOMMENDATION: Approve change of official traffic control map to install stop signs.
