There have been unified efforts between several departments of the city, along with state entities <br />which have addressed businesses who embrace a criminal status, In the -,,,:)ast these businesses have <br />had multiple shootings, stabbings, fights, drugs and the like which required the extraordinary <br />measure for government to close that business. The calls for service reflected in these reports do <br />not rise to that level. <br />Should we be concerned about the safety of people who routinely use the services of less expensive <br />motels who cause no problems and those businesses who are in the area of the motel? <br />Absolutely. <br />In dealing with any troubled area, we have found that an increased police presence along with <br />cooperation by the business involved seems to lower the calls for service and make the area safer. <br />I would rather continue our current response (which will increase calls for service) and see if we <br />can fix this long to instead of finding a way to fine or eventually close the business. <br />Again, providing a context to calls for service, one of our major retailers had 63 calls for service <br />for the month of January and two of our larger grocery stores recorded 25 and 16. <br />BUDGET: No impact to the department budget. <br />RECOMMENDATION: Provide direction to Staff. <br />
