<br />3.3 Transformer Installation. The transformer shall be buried in the <br />ground at a suitable location adjacent to the stake. No portion of the <br />transformer case shall be less than ten inches below the ,ground level. <br />The transformer shall be laid on a side with lead horizontal and <br />trained toward the stake. The primary cable connections shall' be made <br />as described in paragraph 3.6 (a). The secondary lead of the <br />transformer shall be brought into position at the bottom of the <br />mounting assembly fitting. The attached connector on the transformer <br />lead shall be positioned with the cable connectors in place on the <br />clamp support attached to the stake. <br /> <br />The transformer shall be placed on a 3 inch layer of bedding <br />material and shall be covered with a layer of the same material and of <br />the same thickness. Bedding and cover material shall be either earth <br />or sand containing no particles that would be retained on a 1/4 sieve. <br />All backfield materials shall be thoroughly tamped and compacted. If <br />necessary to obtain compaction, the backfill material shall be <br />moistened or aerated as required. <br /> <br />3.4 Stake Installation. The stake shall not be installed by driving. <br />The excavation for the stake shall be not less than 6 inches in <br />diameter. The stake shall be installed to sufficient depth so that the <br />shearing groove of the breakable coupling shall not extend more than 3 <br />1/2 inches above finished grade. Backfill shall be made with earth <br />containing no particles that would be retained on a 1 inch sieve. All <br />backfill material shall be thoroughly tamped and compacted. If <br />necessary to obtain compactions, the backfill materials shall be <br />moistened or aerated as required. The stake shall be vertical to <br />within three degrees. The stableness of the stakes installed in place <br />shall be to the satisfaction of the Engineer. <br /> <br />3.5 Concrete Anchor...NOT TO BE USED <br /> <br />3.6 Assembling the Unit. The elevated sign shall be assembled in <br />accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions. The <br />transformer secondary shall be connected to the lamp leads by means of <br />the disconnecting plug and receptacle provided with the unit, and this <br />joint shall not be taped. Lamps of the proper rating shall be <br />installed in the sign. <br /> <br />3.7 Cable Connections. Underground cable will be installed between <br />the units as"a separate item under the Item "Installation of <br />Underground Cable for Airports". The Contractor shall connect this <br />cable to the transformer. The connection to the underground cable <br />supply shall be made by one of the followin9 methods: <br /> <br />, <br />(a) Direct Connection. The transformer primary lead connectors shall <br />be plugged directly into mating connectors of Field-Attached for <br />Factory-Molded Plug-In Splices on the supply cables, whichever is <br />called for on the plans. The splices shall be attached to the supply <br />cables as specified. <br />
