Paris Public Advisory Board
Meeting Minutes
June 30, 2021
Opening:
The meeting of the Paris Public Library Advisory Board was called to order by Vice -Chair,
Melanie Loughmiller at 4:15 p.m.
Present:
Board members present were: Melanie Loughmiller, Steve Hellmann, Marilyn Threadgill, Eva
Dickey, Myers Hurt, Jennifer Cullum, Library Director Tim DeGhelder, and City Council Liaison
Linda Knox. Board member Lauren Matthews was absent.
Approval of Minutes: The minutes of the May 19, 2021 meeting were approved, with
the correction to the June 30, 2021 Agenda dates correction. Corrections made to
the agenda were the date of the meeting from June 23, 2021 to June 30 2021 and
the approval of the previous meeting's minutes from February 24, 2021 to May 19,
2021, as well as striking the Disaster Response Plan from New Business as it was
accidentally carried over for a point of discussion from the May agenda.
Councilwoman Linda Knox asked for clarification regarding the discussion of
additional funding needs for the Children's Library budget in May's meeting minutes.
Steven noted that at the May meeting, the board recognized how the children seem
to borrow more books and yet, the adult budget is larger. Melanie added that the
board's main concern was regarding adequate funding for the children's programs.
Mr. DeGhelder further clarified that the number of children's books checked out in
comparison to adult books may be skewed due to the fact that most children's
books are smaller in size and so more would be checked out at one time. Children's
books also cost less than adult books, necessitating the larger budget for purchase of
adult books.
New Business: The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met with the new Library
Director, Tim DeGhelder. Mr. DeGhelder presented an informational bio while
introducing himself to the board. He is new to the Paris area and has most recently
lived and taught English to children in Thailand, where he met his wife, Pichamon.
Tim was only in place at the library for two days prior to the advisory board meeting
but came to the meeting with plenty of energy and new ideas for the direction he
would like to take. After a summary was provided of his ideas, the board was excited
and voiced approval for the upcoming opportunities that Mr. DeGhelder has
