The commission discussed the canopy design. Chairman Matthews asked Mr.
Archer about the depth of the canopy, and if could be extended further out from
the building. He brought to the attention of the commission that the design of the
canopies in the district do extend out for the purpose of covering the sidewalk,
Covering the sidewalk would be consistent with the districts design. The
proposed canopy is 4 ft in depth. Mr. Archer agreed this would be an appropriate
treatment, and was would need to speak to the engineer about why the canopy
was 4 ft, but it was consistent with the previous fabric awning. He would speak to
the engineers who designed the canopy to determine depth that the building
fagade could actually support. He did tell them there was an intent to reduce the
number of tie rods, and they would also work on shortening them not to penetrate
the brick of the building if possible, and go into the wood portion above the
transoms windows, which still exist behind the fagade. Upon receiving
information from the engineers, he would bring new information to the HPO for
further discussion and approval, and if needed the commission agreed to schedule
a special meeting if necessary. A motion was made by Commissioner Coyle to
approve the canopy materials design, but to extend the canopy a minimum of 8 ft
over the sidewalk. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Johnson. Motion
carried S ayes, 0 nays.
Mr. Archer also explained the canopy would extend across both 11 S. Plaza and
17 S. Plaza, as this property has one fagade, and had one address until it was
subdivided.
5.
