The following members were present:
Arvin Starrett, Chairman
Matt Coyle
Jerry Raper
Paul Denney, Vice Chairman
Susan Scholz, Secretary
Brad Archer
Ben Vaughan
B. The following members were absent:
None
C. Also present was Bethany Golden, Asst. Historic Preservation Officer.
2. Consideration of and action on the following Certificates of Appropriateness:
a. 9 East Plaza - Artesia Enterprises, LLC -Gary Brown, Artesia Enterprises, LLC,
stated he wants to restore the faqade to the original look of the building. He has
chosen a natural color for cast stone so it will look like cast stone and not painted. He
emphasized that he wants to use Monterrey White for the trim and Handcock Grey for
the brick. The mortar is deep, giving it a more authentic look, less glossy. Mr.
Brown further stated he took the buildings adjacent to his into consideration to
coordinate color-wise; and the same door and window design will be wrapped in
wood like the ones on the top floor. He went over the proposed sign as well, with no
lighting proposed at this time. There will be a loft upstairs. The alcove will be
wrapped in bead board.
Arvin Starrett stated the paint issues for brick/trim is regulated by the Commission
and must be masonry color only, but trim is fine so long as it is in the paint book. He
also asked what evidence shows the material used in the alcove, and if masonry was
used in the alcove. Gary Brown said he could only see wood plate lines. Chairman
Starrett stated using bead board to replace masonry was not appropriate according to
the Department of Interior Standards. Arvin and Paul recommended bringing brick
panels all the way down. This way the front fagade would be all masonry. Paul
suggested using an old car siding (plain) looking 3/ inch vs. bead boarding. It has a v
groove center match and looks more substantial in nature. Motion was made by
Susan Scholz, seconded by Paul Denney to approve the COA for the sign, paint, and
alcove remodel; with the bead board being replaced with v groove. Motion carried 7-
- 000034
