C. COLLECTION SYSTEM MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
1. Preventive Maintenance
Preventive maintenance is a program of scheduled inspection, cleaning, and minor
repairs to detect potential problems and prevent their development so that the
collection system is available to the users at all times. An effective program can
prevent failures in the wastewater collection system and save costs of major
reconstruction. It also can avert hazards to public health. This section presents a
preventive maintenance program. It provides a schedule and recommends
intervals for preventive maintenance activities.
2. Schedule
Scheduled maintenance ensures attention to all parts of the system at intervals
frequent enough to discover and correct developing problems before serious
damage results. Periodic inspections promote efficient use of equipment and
manpower through planning. The schedule should consider such factors as the
pipe size, material, type of construction, the normal volume and character of flow,
and possibility of overloads. The service area (residential, business, industrial,
etc.) and equivalent population, past problems or failures, and equipment and size
of crew required should also be considered. Table IV-4 presents a preventive
maintenance schedule for the Paris sanitary collection system.
ADS Environmental Services, Inc.
IV-14
