3. PrevenNve Maintenance Tasks <br />a) Surface Inspection <br />Surface inspection is recommended once every two years for the entire <br />system. In outlying areas, walking the right-of-way is the most efficient <br />surface inspection method. The inspector looks for sunken or flooded <br />areas, grou.nd cracks along pipeline routes, easement encroachment, <br />evidence of vandalism, and damage to special structures and manholes. <br />Surface inspection of pipelines along city streets can be made from a <br />vehicle. The inspector looks for manhole covers above or below the <br />pavement level and evidence of flooding or seepage from the collection <br />system. The annual amount inspected will be approximately 500,000 feet, <br />at a cost of approximately $20,000. <br />b) Television Inspection <br />Routine internal television inspection of all pipelines in the system is <br />recommended once every five years. Whereas television inspection <br />during the course of this study was defect-oriented, ongoing inspection <br />will allow for assessment of rehabilitation effectiveness, as well as <br />pinpoint mains that are leaking or that may leak.
