GROUNDWATER <br />Water that exists under the ground on a more or less continuous basis. The level of <br />groundwater is higher or lower depending upon the season of the year and rainfall. If <br />groundwater levels exceed pipe elevations and a pipe is defective, then INFILTRATION <br />is the result. <br />IDM (INCH-DIAMETER-MILE) <br />A unit of ineasurement that takes into account a pipe's length and diameter. <br />Len. <br />IDM = Dia.x 5280 <br />Since INFILTRATION is the result of groundwater surrounding the pipe, the diameter <br />component is very useful in summarizing infiltration results (i.e., GPD/idm). <br />INDEPENDENT SYSTEM <br />A SUB-BASIN that does not receive flow measured by any other flow monitors. <br />INFILTRATION <br />Groundwater entering a sanitary collection system through such means as, but not limited <br />to, defective pipes, pipe joints, connections or manhole walls. <br />INFILTRATION INCREASE <br />See INFILTRATION <br />INFLOW <br />Rain event RL1N-OFF which is discharged directly into a sanitary collection system from <br />such sources as, but not limited to, roof leaders, cellaz drains, foundation drains, manhole <br />covers, CROSS CONNECTIONS from storm sewers, and surface run-off. <br />UI <br />The combination of INFILTRATION and/or INFLOW. <br />ADS Environmental Services, Inc. <br />VI-3 <br />
