INUNDATED
A general term indicating that water drains to and ponds over or floods a LEAK source.
This is to be distinguished from water moving over a source. Inundation normally results
in a severe leaking defect.
LEAK
A collection system DEFECT that is either observed to be actively contributing UI or
exhibits EVIDENCE that UI has occurred or will occur.
LINE SEGMENT
That portion of the MAINLINE between an upstream and downstream MANHOLE. In
order to note the location of a DEFECT or LEAK, a line segment consists of the
upstream manhole and the outgoing collection pipe up to, but not including the
downstream manhole.
LINE CLEANING
The process by which mud, sand and debris, or grease is removed from a collection line.
Although other methods are available, this is normaily accomplished by pulling a high
pressure water nozzle back through a pipe thus scrubbing the walls with water and also
moving debris back towards the water source for removal. Line cleaning is normally
conducted prior to TV INSPECTION.
MAINLINE
That portion of gravity collection system (exclusive of SERVICE line) maintained by the
system owner. This pipe is usually located in a right-of-way (or easement) that is
normally located between two MANHOLES but is occasionally a lateral segment with no
upstream manhole.
MAINTENANCE
The process by which sewers are cleazed of debris, grease or blockages. Maintenance is
primarily conducted in order to improve hydraulic efficiency.
ADS Environmental Services, Inc.
VI-4
