MANHOLE
A point of service entry where the collection line can be observed or maintained. An
upstream manhole receives sewage and through its outgoing line contributes flow
towards a downstream manhole.
MANHOLE INSPECTION
The process by which a variety of information concerning MANHOLES is obtained.
This information includes dimensions, construction materials, general conditions and
DEFECTS/LEAKS. Manhole inspections are either above ground in which observations
are made without descending the manhole or below ground in which the manhole is
either descended or observed by some type of viewing device. Below ground inspections
include information from that portion of each LINE SEGMENT that can be observed
from the manhole being inspected.
MIGRATION
Flow removed from one defect, in many cases, can "migrate" and enter the system
through another defect that has not been REHABILITATED. This can reduce the
accuracy of rehabilitation removal estimates.
MUNICIPAL SERVICE
A service line that directs flow from a residence or business to either a MAINLINE or
MANHOLE. Municipal service is that portion of the service line located within the
MAINLINE right-of-way (or easement). Generally, this is service line located between
the MAINLINE and the property line.
PRIVATE SERVICE
That portion of the service line located on private property.
QUANTIFICATION
The process by which flow RATES aze estimated for leaking DEFECTS. Leak rates are
assigned based upon observed EXTRANEOUS flow, EVIDENCE of I/I, the type of
defect and drainage potential.
ADS Environmental Services, Inc.
VI-5
