45 - Repair Faulty Mainline Tap
Normally, the only way to identify a faulty mainline service tap is through
television inspection. The exception occurs when the defect is visible from the
manhole during physical inspection. The leak can occur in two ways: an installed
wye can be defective or a hammer tap exists. A hammer tap occurs when a
service line is attached to the mainline by simply knocking a hole in the line,
inserting the pipe, and sealing azound the opening with ceinent or another sealant.
This rehabilitation method consists of excavating to expose the service line,
installing a new wye, and reconnecting the service line. An alternative method
for a structurally sound service connection is to seal the tap with chemical grout.
46 - Repair Manhole/Pipe Connection - External
Defects often develop at the connection between the collection main and the
manhole wall. If the defect cannot be repaired from within the manhole,
excavation to expose the defect and repair from outside by sleeving or patching is
required. Normally, any connection defect which extends into the pipe will
require an external repair because at least one joint of pipe will need to be
replaced.
47 - Repair Manhole/Pipe Connection - Internal
The seal at the pipe connection leaks or has minor root intrusion. This
rehabilitation method addresses patching from the inside of the manhole using a
non-shrink grout or chemical grout injection.
48 - Pluiz Storm Drain at Main - Direct Connection
The simplest way to repair an illegal direct connection is to plug the storm drain
where it connects to the sanitary line. Additional costs will accrue if the storm
drain must have new connections to the remainder of the drainage systems.
These costs are not accounted for in the cost tables.
ADS Environmental Services, Inc.
VI-19
